Seven Universal Health Services (UHS) Hospitals Become Validated Gluten Free Safe Spots for Patients, Staff and Visitors

AUBURN, Wash. (December 2, 2021)—The nonprofit Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG), the industry leader in the certification of gluten-free products and foodservices, announced today that its Gluten-Free Food Service (GFFS) organization has designated seven hospitals owned and operated by a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) as Validated Gluten Free Safe Spots. UHS is one of the largest and most respected providers of hospital and healthcare services in the nation with nearly 90,000 employees dedicated to improving people’s lives and transforming the delivery of healthcare. The GFFS program offers the independent verification of an organization’s food handling practices for safe gluten-free food production and service.

The seven UHS hospitals designated by GFFS as Validated Gluten Free Safe Spots include:

 

Approximately 3 million Americans are diagnosed with celiac disease, a condition that causes an immune response to the consumption of the gluten protein found in wheat, barley and rye products. For people with celiac disease and other forms of gluten-sensitivity, being able to seek treatment at a GFFS-validated medical facility allows patients to focus on their treatment without worrying that they will eat something that can cause additional health issues. Organizations validated through GFFS must develop written policies and procedures, implement a staff training program and undergo an audit to ensure they adhere to best practices for gluten-free food production and service.
